The
pattern craft traditions in India were to take and which were to
survive for 5000 years appear mature and firmly established in the
cities of the Indus valley. Craftsmen in these cities had discovered
the use of wheel and control of fire: this has transformed his method
of transport and the tools with which he moulded his clay pots.
He had learnt to cast and forge metals. Man had discovered geometry
and the sacred nature of the abstract and had evolved simple tools
for the measurements of angles.
World over Indian handicrafts have carved a niche for themselves
meriting a rare demand: the ultimate ode to the dedicated craftsmen
who have striven hard in a labour of love to hone to perfection
their inherited ancient skills. And while one century yields to
another and then to yet another these skills are reverently handed
down from generation to generation. Ensuing the accretion and accumulation
of artistic wealth of India, exhibited in an overwhelming variety
of products, combining aesthetic appeal with utilitarian value.
Each region of India steeped in its own unique culture and imbued
with its sown unique character abounds in handicrafts reflective
of the region and stands testimony to the genius of its local craftsmen.
The legendry beauty of Himachal Pradesh and its people constitute
the regions artistic consciousness. This is reflective in arts
and crafts of the ebullient Himachalis who delight in creating a
resplendent range of artifacts that are a spiritual oasis in the
wilderness of modem life. Each unique piece is a fundamental preserve
of an individual, a heartfelt expression. It proclaims, not just
the dexterity of hand and acuteness of eye, it goes farther-it delves
into the innermost recesses of Soul.
To honor, cherish and promote the handicrafts industry and to accord
recognition to their glorious tradition of excellent craftsmanship-Himachal
Pradesh.Government formed this corporation in 1947.
Today Corporations Design Development Center is committed to evolving
new designs, which are infused with the innate tradition and spirit
of Himachal. Yak and Goat hair floor coverings and other such crafts
have either gone extinct or are on the fast decline, the corporation
is making all-out efforts to revive these skills and inject new
blood to these areas.
